We are thankful each day for the men and women who fight to protect our nation, and it seems only fitting that we are able to show our gratitude to a catastrophically injured service member by welcoming him home for the holidays.
On November 21, 2017, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, SSGT Marcus Burleson was presented with his mortgage-free, custom-built smart home.
Marcus Burleson served three deployments in Iraq, Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan. On December 9, 2011, while on dismounted patrol, Burleson and his team conducted a sweep on a suspicious area.
After locating and rendering one IED safe, SSGT Burleson and his team conducted a secondary sweep, uncovering a second device. As Marcus knelt over the IED to render it safe, the device detonated causing an explosion that resulted in the loss of both of his arms, a broken neck and other bones, loss of vision in his left eye and other major injuries.
The smart home, built in Dublin, TX, was built specifically with Burleson's injuries in mind. High tech features in the home will allow Marcus to do things for himself that he previously would have considered impossible.
Many sponsors joined together to make this project possible, including Floors Inc. Carpet One Floor & Home in South Lake, TX who donated installation of the flooring throughout the home.
